Kick Off New Year with Focus on Injury Prevention
A new year is a good time to think about how you want to move through it. For Marines training in demanding environments and military families balancing work, activities, and everyday life, staying active matters—but so does preparing your body for the demands you place on it.
Injury prevention isn't just about what you do after something hurts. It starts with preparing your body to move well, build strength, and recover from the activities you ask it to handle.
Shift Your Mindset: Mobility + Strength = Resilience
Think of injury prevention as active preparation. Building mobility and functional strength can help your body handle the movements and demands of training, recreation, work, and everyday life.
Mobility supports movement. Mobility work can help maintain the range of motion needed to perform movements effectively and comfortably. Whether you're preparing for PT, lifting weights, playing a sport, or keeping up with the kids, mobility helps you move through the positions those activities require.
Strength builds capacity. Strong muscles help your body handle the demands placed on it. Functional strength training builds the capacity needed for military training, recreation, and everyday activities.
When you combine mobility, strength, and recovery, you build a solid base that helps you stay active all year.
3 Steps to Start Smart in 2027
1. Start with a dynamic warm-up.
Use active movements that prepare your muscles and joints for the activity ahead. Choose movements that reflect the tasks, exercises, or activities you are about to perform.
2. Train strength and mobility.
Include both strength and mobility work in your overall training routine. Build strength through the ranges of motion you use in training, work, recreation, and everyday activities.
3. Schedule recovery.
Make sleep, nutrition, rest days, and recovery work part of your training plan. Recovery gives your body time to adapt to the demands you place on it and helps you stay consistent over time.
Make Movement Part of Your Year
Injury prevention isn't just for Marines preparing for PT or performance goals. The same principles can support anyone who runs, lifts, participates in recreational sports, works a physically demanding job, or simply wants to stay active.
Start with what fits your current fitness level and goals, then build from there. Small, consistent habits can create a stronger foundation for the year ahead.
